The MasterCard Foundation Scholars at Michigan State University are committed to giving back to their community, both at their homes in Africa, and here in East Lansing. This month, Scholars volunteered at Nyaka AIDS Orphans Project where they provided support for the annual fundraising drive. The founder of Nyaka AIDS Orphan Project, Jackson Kaguri, has close ties to MSU, having served as the interim senior director of development in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, before he left to work full time for the AIDS Orphan Project, where he works to bring an end to poverty and hunger in Uganda through education, healthcare, and community development.

Also this month, Scholars spent the day at the Hunter Park GardenHouse of the Allen Neighborhood Center –a project designed to empower the community and promote youth civic involvement –where they worked in the greenhouse and helped to prepare garden beds for winter planning.

The MasterCard Foundation Scholars will continue their acts of giving as October goes on. The MasterCard Foundation Scholars Day of Service –in unison with the Spartan Day of Service –is scheduled for October 22nd. The Spartan Day of Service is an MSU tradition, organized and upheld by the university's Center for Service-Learning and Civic Engagement, an establishment that works to "advance community engaged learning at Michigan State University and prepare students for lifelong civic and social responsibility in an increasingly diverse and complex global society." The Scholars will also support the Greater Lansing Food Bank at the end of the month.

Fellow Spartans can also give back by signing up with the Center for Service-Learning and Civic Engagement. Any organizations that are looking for support can write a request to The MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program at MSU on Facebook here
