In June 2017, the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program held a Scholar summit in Johannesburg, South Africa. More than 200 Scholars from tertiary partner institutions attended.

39 Scholars (11 Master's and 28 undergraduates) from the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at Michigan State University are engaged in research and internships at 41 sites throughout 15 African nations and the United States.

In the fall of 2016, faculty at Michigan State University launched the African Female Student Empowerment Program. AFSEP works to educate, encourage, and inspire African female students at MSU.

Every year, MasterCard Foundation Scholars elect a new Scholars Council Representative. After a nomination and campaign process, a Scholar is chosen to hold this position for a one-year term. The newly elected Representative is Jackie Umurerwa, an undergraduate nursing student expecting to graduate in December 2019.

Growing up in Zimbabwe, MasterCard Foundation Scholar Panashe Mayangamutse dreamt of becoming an engineer. Now, she is looking forward to returning to Africa to apply what she's learned at Michigan State—to positively affect the engineering profession, her community, and the world.


2017 Graduating Class of MSU's MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program

MSU's MasterCard Foundation Graduating Scholars were celebrated at the program's graduation reception on May 3. The 2017 class represents a significant milestone because of its size—the 10 undergraduate and 12 graduate scholars represent the largest graduating class that the program has ever had.

Several MasterCard Foundation Scholars had the opportunity to present at the annual University Undergraduate Research and Arts Forum (UURAF) which provides Michigan State undergraduate students with an opportunity to showcase their scholarship and creative activity. The students' research was varied, with presentations on topics such as neuroscience, poetry, and non-governmental organizations.

The Honors College at Michigan State University hosted a Give Back Competition and Colloquium on March 28, 2017. The competition invited students to submit a video blog outlining the service work they organized in their communities. After deliberation by MSU faculty, MasterCard Foundation Scholar Gobi Bah was chosen as first-place winner for his work with RESTORE Worldwide.
